On June 20, 2016 at 6:30 AM, Elise filled her water bottle for the last time. From the water fountain, Elise headed to lane 7 where she started the 400 free warm up at 6:32 AM. Unknowingly, Elise was swimming without anyone watching her, as her coach left the bulkhead at 6:33 AM. The coach would return with a thermos of coffee at 6:42. Between 6:40-6:41 AM, Elise slipped under the water at the south end of the pool while her teammates where swimming toward the north end. Between 6:46-6:47 AM, swimmers in Elise’s lane switched from a kick set with their head above water to a freestyle set with their face in the water. When the swimmers in Elise’s lane noticed her, they swam down 7 feet to pull Elise to the surface. Three of her friends tried to keep Elise’s face out of the water while they drug her over the lane rope to the deck. While CPR was started by a coach, EMS received the 911 call at 6:48:35. The AED was powered on at 6:49:56 AM and connected to Elise at 6:51:33 AM. Ten seconds later and again at 6:53:58 the AED commanded, “NO SHOCK ADVISED.” When a person has been without oxygen for over 6 minutes, there’s significant brain damage. The brain stops and then the heart stops. The AED is looking for an irregular rhythm to reset, it will not shock when there is no rhythm at all. I share the details of Elise’s drowning, so that others will connect with this message in a deep and meaningful way. So that each person who hears her story realizes the significance of water safety and drowning prevention. Her drowning had nothing to do with her swimming ability, it had everything to do with safety protocols that were not followed. Regardless if it is a public pool or a private pool, NEVER leave a child unsupervised near water. #Swim4Elise

There have been 8 infant bathtub drownings in Texas since January! This is a PSA reminder: ZERO DISTRACTIONS WHEN YOUR CHILD IS IN WATER. Children should be watched by a designated capable undistracted adult in any type of water. NEVER LEAVE AN INFANT UNATTENDED IN WATER. EVER! #watersafety #BathtubSafety #swim4elise

Sandy Leon honors his daughter who survived a nonfatal drowning after 12 minutes. His wife Liliana Leon attempted CPR and prayed for a miracle. The toddler fell in their backyard pool reaching for a rubber duck. He now wears no. 12 as a reminder how precious life is.
We are grateful this little girl’s story was a nonfatal drowning. It is also a good reminder to remove all toys from the pool and install barriers of access to water for your children. We hope that Sandy @rangers @major_league_baseball_players will continue to use his reach to educate others on water safety. @swim4elise is a North Texas nonprofit that shares the fatal drowning or our daughter Elise, to prevent fatal drownings for other families. When the Swim4Elise Foundation started the Elise Cerami Memorial College Scholarship in 2017 very few applicants, if any, had lifeguard certifications.

This year, 31 swimmers applied to the college scholarship and 27 of them had lifeguard certifications!!! This is the largest culture shift in water safety that we have seen yet! All while the aquatics industry has experienced “lifeguard shortages.”

Amazing to see how Elise’s life and legacy are making such a positive impact!!!

Come join us for the scholarship recognition ceremony between 7-7:30 AM on Saturday, May 13 at Run4Elise 5K/1Mile Fun Run/Walk We will be applauding these tremendous swimmers, like the one in the photo from last year!
